Dolphine asks me about the difference between equation and half-equation.
In Chemistry we need to know writing equations for chemical reactions. The equations show the reactants and products in the reactions.
Example: Heating calcium carbonate in a test tube, calcium oxide and carbon dioxide are produced. Its equation will be CaCO3 --> CaO + CO2
The equation shows all the compounds involved. It indicates the ratio of compunds needed also.
In electrochemical reactions, we will be asked to write half-equations for reactions at the anode and cathode.
Example: Zn---> Zn2+ + 2e Cu2+ + 2e ---> Cu
The equations show the transfer of electrons in the reactions. Both the half equations can be combined to form an equation.
Zn + Cu2+ ---> Zn2+ + Cu
