This December is the busiest month in my life.
Both me and my wife had to attend to all responsilbilities as follows.
-attending meeeetings in KL,Temerloh,Lipis,Kuantan and Bentong.
-sending off children to Taiwan for tours in Federal Hotel,KL
-receiving them back from KLIA
-receiving my daughter from Jakarta in LCCT
-sending off her to Bandung in LCCT
-1 day family trip to Lipis
-4 hours family trip to Genting
Anyway it's a wondeful month.

Potentials in life
I went for a wedding dinner today.
I have a chance to know a woman aged around 30s. She is not educated. She works as housewive in the morning and opens a noodle stall in the evening to supplement her family income. Her business is quite good and is not affected much by the recent economic recession.
She has difficulty to handle her kids. Her eldest daughter,a from 1 girl, is very rebellious. She wants to help but no means to do it. She wants to teach them about skills to live in this complex society besides the normal school education. I praised her effort.
She reads motivational books to uplift her attitudes towards life.
I give her encouragement to read the books again and again, internalise the contents and use it in her daily activities. Then her family and children will slowly evolve into a better one.
Be positive and optimistic in life.
Life as a human is precious.
We have inborn wills to lead and adapt our life to the changing environment
We can overcome all difficulties if we are contended with the surrounding.

Annual Performance Awards
I was invited to attend a meeting together with all my school administrators to handle annual appraisal of teachers in the schools.
It was my first participation in such affair.
We were briefed on procedures to select teachers to be awarded the annual best performance awards. Firstly we shorlisted names according to categories such as DG41,DG44 and DG32. Then they were chosen on rotation basis or seniority basis.
In the discussion we exchanged views on the performance of teachers in the fields of academics,co-curricular and others. But no weightage was given to each field for us to decide on the awards.
We also touched on the proactive behaviours of teachers. We noticed that some are proactive in outside class activities and some are proactive in the class. It was a challenging and difficult task to make decisions on the awards.
Who to choose?
My friend called me yerterday night about the ways used to do appraisal. He felt that it's unfair for those who work diligently to help upgrade the academic performance in the class without noticed by the head of department compared to those who play truant but are active in the fields only and noticed by all.
Normally those are more active in the fields will be given the awards.
Besides, there are teachers who always show up only when the heads are around. Maybe they are regarded as proactive teachers in the eyes of the heads and get the awards also.
I am of the view that weightage should be made according to performance in all fields such as 80% in the academics, 10% in the co-curricular activities and 10% in others.
It will be a better appraisal instrument.

SPM starts today
SPM examinations 2008 starts today.
My youngest son is one of them taking the exams today.
All the BEST to him and others.
I pray to all Boddisatwas and beings,seen and unseen in different realms and worlds,to shed bright light on the candidates sitting for the exams.
Help to remove their anxiety,fears,fright and nervousness.
Give them confidence and peace.
Void them of sufferings.
May all beings be happy and prosperous.

Prepare for death
I have a Buddhist elder who is recently confirmed that he has liver cancer.
He looks thinner and weaker. He has undergone a few operations in the last few months in Selayang Hosptal.
A private doctor has told his family that his organs in his stomach is deteriorating and can't function normally. His days is numbered.
I felt so sad for him.
He was our elder in Buddhist circle. He used to work and service our Buddhist activities tirelessly for the past 24 years. He practises chanting and meditation.
On my first visit, we had a good exchange of view about preparation for death.
In Buddhism body and mind are ONE.
The bodily sickness can be diagnosed or cured or reduced by using medication prescribed by doctors but not the mind. Our mind can be inspected internally only by ourselves. We know our mind. We know our doings and deeds. Good or bad.
Our mind determines our bodily sickness.
A wholesome mind will have a better health and happiness.
An unwholesome mind will bring more pains and sufferings.
My Buddhist elder says he has prepeared to let go and change for a new body in the next life. I am happy to hear that. I adviced him to stick to it and never forget the help from Boddisatwas.
Boddisatwas have vows to help us out of any sufferings and pains.

Why foreign trained students are better?
I was called to attend a meeting organised by PPK from 4th to 7th Nov 2008 at Sanctuary Resorts Cherating,Kuantan to do comparison between our SPM science subjects curriculum specifications with some foreign countries' such as Australia,British,Canada and Singapore.
After the comparisons we noticed that our cs is more compact and more academic in two years Form 4 and Form 5. The foreign ones are more activity-based and student-centred. Their academic materials are less. Time allocation is more for activities.
We do stress on the dvelopment of the thinking skills and science processing skills and creative skills. Time is not allowed for us to attain such noble aims stated in our cs.
There are two opposing views about the existing secondary education. One is to produce students of global mantality,and full of creativity.The other one is to emphasise the academic achievement in public examinations.
They always put the blame on the opposition for the failure of our students in their career advancement and soft skills.
In fact our cs is adequate to train students to attain independent creativity and vision in all fields such as management skills,morals,experimenting skills,personal relationship skills and others.
Teachers are bound by the respective directives from the Head, PPD,JPN and the Ministry to implement programmes that may not bring forth benefits to the schools or students. Most of the programmes are time-consuming. Teachers are forced or unwillingly to run the programmes in their classes which is supposed to be used just for teaching.
In the meeetings, we voiced out such predicaments. But no one is able to help us out.

Poor Teaching?
Teaching is a noble profession. It needs love and caring spirit.
You must have the love and enthusiasm to teach the unknown to be known,the weak to be strong and the poor to be rich in knowledge.
You just can't talk and read only in the class.
You just can't be boastful of your academic records in the past.
You are a teacher supposedly respected by your students.
We have come across news about the poor state of teaching in schools.
Teachers are negatively reported about absenteeism in class,talk and chalk only,sit and talk,playing handphones, always engaged with co-curricular activities,reading from text,scold and angry with students,poor command of language,poor communication skills , answer scripts not returned but marks are given,......
Of course they are good and dedicated teachers in the schools also. But it's minority lot only.
Normally those teachers are trained in the 60s and 70s. They show responsibility and interest in work. They are always available in school unless they are immobile.
I have a woman collegue who was pregnant but felt sick and was difficult to move around in the school. She never took any leave to be absent from school. She arranged and used the school resource centre to be her class. Her students came to attend her classes there. She never complained about any pain or suffering.
Nowadays it's difficult to observe such characteriatics in school.
How to improve the state of teaching?

Juvenil Pregnancy

Some school going students are so free to mingle around with opposite sex.
We are in the dark about their activities.

Ghost in school
A worker was working at night around 10pm in my school to do laboratory renovation. He enconuntered an object looked like a human being stood motionless in front of him. The object stared at him. He and his friends were so frightened to stare at the object. They knew it was a ghost or any being from the other realm of world. The object wore a white blouse ,legless and floating in the air. No sound.Silent.
There are many types of beings living in our space.They may be humans,animals,birds,two-legged ,three-legged,four-legged or many legged living beings in the sea,on the land or in the air.
Seen or unseen.Good or bad. Loving or fierce. Kind or bad-hearted.Clever or stupid.
Ensuring to have a healthy and prosperous life, we need to avoid evils and do more good deeds. Respect the seen and unseen beings. They will protect us. They will not harm us.They will help us in difficulties.
Don't fool them.
Don't look down upon them .
Don't be funny with them.
Don't make any requests from them.
Don't make any promise.
Then they will not hurt and harm you.
May the light of happiness shines on you always.

Love
A mother came to me to talk about her daughter's love problem. Her daughter is only 15.
She told me that her daughter has fallen in love with a guy in the town without her knowledge.
She is worried. Her husband had cried over it.
Her worries about her daughter are as follows.
1. Will she get pregnant?
2. Will she get raped?
3. Will she be cheated?
4. How is her future?
5. Will she marry young?
6. can the guy support her?

Lately,the guy has bought a hand phone for her. They have contacts secretly. Some of the sms read as follows.
1. I want to die.
2. I love you.
3. I need you.
4. I want you.
and others.
Her mother cares.She wants to help.
I am of the view that both must sit down and talk it out.
The mother needs to discuss with her about
1. how the early love will affect her future life
2. the importance of education
3. the problems of setting up a family
4. the finance of a family
5. the children
6. the household chores
Her daughter must listen to the advice and experience given by her mother.
She needs to look into her parents' difficulties to run a family.
When both have understanding and common view, the problem will end automatically without any quarrels and sour face.
Falling in love in the early age is not encouraged and not suitable for students.
Pregnancy is common in the town.
It will ruin her and her husband.

They have financial constraints also.

Students insulted
A student has been absent for days after her final year exams.
My friend is curious about it. He inquires about her whereabout from her classmates.
He is informed that she doesn't like to go to school beacause she doesn't like a teacher.
She says the teacher always looks domn upon her, teases her and says sarcastic words to her. The teacher also passes bad comments on her academic results.
She feels insulted and not respected by the teacher. She wants to escape from the teacher.
As a teacher, he/she must have the patience and caring spirit in their teaching career. They must have the positive attitude to educate children without any biases. They must try all the effort to help the children to understand the academic materials. They must also try to understand the children's problem in learning processes.
Are they slow learners?
Are they equipped with all the necessary tools for learning?
How well is our teaching?
Can they follow the teaching?
Are we too enthusiastic to impart teaching materials?
Do we care about their capbilities?
Do we care only about results?
What is our right to look down upon them?
Can they comment on our teaching?
Can they look down upon us?
Do we deserve respect from them?
I wonder.

My school is given the opportunity to participate in the film shooting programmes done by BTP. Its aim is to promote the good image of my school.We are asked to prepare for the programme today.
We have called two meetings to inform all members of the school to get ready for the day.We update our information boards. We clean all places in the school. We organise the prize giving assembly. And others.
We have been waiting for their arrival since 7.15am in the assembly.
On 8.25am only they arrive.
They are late. They are not punctual. They are not on time.
Punctuality is important for all of us.
Punctuality shows that we are caring and concerned about others' welfare.
Punctuality indicates our good personality about life.
Punctuality reflects our sincerity.
Being punctual makes all happy.
Being punctual brings less suffering to all.
Being punctual gives satisfaction to ourselves and others.
So lets be punctual for all occasions.

Indiscipline Students
Nowadays teachers face a lot of indiscipline students in the classrooms.
Students under their charge incessantly give rise to many uncontrollable behaviours.
They are not bothered about exercises given.
Their text books are just left idle at home.
They don't do revision.
Some of them are just sleeping in the class.
They fight.
They play truant...............
Who to blame?
Teachers blame parents.
Parents blame teachers.
Administors blames the staff.
The staff blame the administors.
No solution at the end of the blame.
I always encourage students to do self-reflection.
Self-reflection is a good practice and insightful . It helps one to know one's weaknesses and strenght.
After knowing self weaknesses and strenght, he/she will look for means to overcome their weak points and to strenghten their good points.
Then one will not repeat doing the same mistakes again.
One will not be lazy.
They will not idle their life.
They will always do good.
They will always avoid evils.
One will have far-sighted vision and mission in life.
They will seek spiritual happiness not material lust.
This practice needs patience and perseverance.
It will be a wonder for you.
Try it.

Surprise visit
My colleaque told me that our PPD paid a surprise visit to school at around 11 am today.
His visit was not noticed by anyone in the school.
My colleague was conducting a class lesson. She spotted the visit. She was panicked and asked all students to be in their classes respectively.
Our PPD toured the block Wawasan floor by floor. Nobody knew about his presence. Nobody aknowledged him. Many classes were without teachers. The students wee loitering outside the classes. It was noisy.
I support such surprise visit to schools. The visit will change the work culture in all schools. The teachers will be more responsible and dedicate.
In fact the school administrators always remind the staff to be in the class in the staff meetings. But it fails to change the teachers indifferent attitude.
Any solutions?

Discovery Methods
My school has daily asssembly for all students and teachers. We need to assemble according to classes and forms at designated places.
I am in-charge of Form 1,2 and 3 classes.
After morning prayer, we will check the students phisical appearance and discipline problems.
The Form 3 students are going to sit for their PMR exams next week. I notice that they are not bothered about the exams. They are not interested to prepare for the exams. My school has arranged classes to help them about techniques of answering questions.
School counsellors also give various types of advice for them to be well-prepared.
In my school days, my tceachers seldom gave such advice. We were in the dark about the exams format. We were not told about where to look for answers. We did not have extra classes also.
Yet we were able to obtain good results. Why?
I guess the methods used by my teachers involved a lot of discovery activities. We needed to look for answers ourselves. We needed to write or to make notes about reading materials by ourselves. So we were trained to be independent and self-reliant. indirectly we were more creative when facing problems in exams.
I suggest that teachers in schools should use more discovery methods in classes. Then the students will be more creative and self-independent.

Lunch in Bukit Tinggi
My family had vacation in KL during raya holidays.
On the way to KL, I purposely dropped in Bukit Tingggi for lunch. the place is recommended by my brother,Kong Yen. He said the pricing there is reasonable.
I am curious. I always wonder about the number of restaurants there. Can they survive?
How is the business?
Surprised. The number of customers was fantastic. Almost all the restaurants were full.
We were told that most of them came from Genting.
We settled at a restaurant which we thought it's food was not so delicious just because it had less customers.
We needed to wait for about 40 minutes for our food arrival. We ordered honey- flavoured pork,half piece of herbal chicken and a plate of vegetable. We enjoyed the food.
It cost us RM49.00 We are happy about it. It's out of our expectation.
After lunch we shopped the market for some fruits and vegetables.
My mother bought a packet of groundnuts for RM5.00 But the quality is bad.
One of the shop keeper told us that some customers visit Bukit Tinggi just to test their luck to have an experience of quake, if there is any.
On the way to KL, I purposely dropped in Bukit Tingggi for lunch. the place is recommended by my brother,Kong Yen. He said the pricing there is reasonable.
I am curious. I always wonder about the number of restaurants there. Can they survive?
How is the business?
Surprised. The number of customers was fantastic. Almost all the restaurants were full.
We were told that most of them came from Genting.
We settled at a restaurant which we thought it's food was not so delicious just because it had less customers.
We needed to wait for about 40 minutes for our food arrival. We ordered honey- flavoured pork,half piece of herbal chicken and a plate of vegetable. We enjoyed the food.
It cost us RM49.00 We are happy about it. It's out of our expectation.
After lunch we shopped the market for some fruits and vegetables.
My mother bought a packet of groundnuts for RM5.00 But the quality is bad.

Melamine is used in making plastics and is loaded with nitrogen molecules.
Because of the high nitrogen content, this makes milk products appear to have a higher protein count as the current methods of measuring protein are based on measuring the nitrogen content alone.
Health experts say that ingesting small amounts does no harm, but sustained use especially in babies and children can cause kidney stones and renal failure, as melamine is insoluble in the human body and tends to deposit itself in the kidneys which cannot remove it from the system via the urine.

Toxic Milk Scandal in China

53000 children are ill
4 children have died
13000 remain in hospital
104 are in serious condition
Milk powder for infants in China is contaminated with a toxic industrial chemical named melamine. It's formula is C3H6N6.
It's a plastic made from copolymerising a white crystalline solid with formadehyde. It's used in the manufacture of synthetic resins in leather tanning.
Pray that all the children will recover healthily.
Pray that all the parents concerned will live without fear and worry.
May all the happiness shines on them.
May all the suffering leaves them.

How to study mathematics?
My headmaster told me that Mathematics is the killer subject in PMR Trial 2008 this morning.
I told him that teachers under my department have been working hard to help the students by using modules. They heve been giving all sorts of advice and techniques of answering.
Sad to say that the result shows their hard-work does not pay.
Why? Who's to blame?
Mathematics is a subject that needs frequent exercises. We need to learn the following skills.
1. Understand mathematics language in the questions like intersect, parallel, gradient....
2. Acquire basic algebraic skills like multiplication, division, addition ...
3. Sketch the diagram,if you need, for better understanding and better picture especially geometry
4. If possible try to relate the questions to the topics or exercises that you have done previously.
5. Ask your friend and your teachers.
6. Repeat the same exercises that you have done

Car smashed
One of my colleaques's car got smashed yerterday. It happened in his house.
He suspects students who want to take revenge on him for disciplinary action taken by him as discipline teacher in the school.
Teaching is a nobel profession respected by all. Teachers have the duty to educate the young. He/She needs to educate the young to be good and knowledgeable citizens. They always devote fully to help the young under their charge as best as possible.
As teachers, we do have mistakes. Usually mistakes are not made on purpose.
Students need to respect and understand the mistakes of a teacher.
Help them to understand their mistakes. Help them to help you.
When you have problems and anger to deal with teachers, go and talk to them. I am sure the solution will be a better one than actions of retaliation.

Equation and Half-equation
Dolphine asks me about the difference between equation and half-equation.
In Chemistry we need to know writing equations for chemical reactions. The equations show the reactants and products in the reactions.
Example: Heating calcium carbonate in a test tube, calcium oxide and carbon dioxide are produced. Its equation will be CaCO3 --> CaO + CO2

Mind is the forerunner
Last week, Lai Ying Xin ,16,from Johor got kidnapped and killed after her family had paid the ransom to the group of kidnappers.
According to police investigation that the kidnappers are her close friends. One of them is her senior schoolmate.
Ying Xin scored 7As in her PMR. She was a homely daughter and hard working. She used to do part time jobs to earn extra money for her own use. But she had to face such a cruel experience.
After reading the news in the morning, I feel sad and angry.
Why she need to receive such a despicable act done by her own friends? Why?
We are living in a civilised society. We are educated. We are frineds in the neighbourhood. We are smarter and wiser than the animals. Yet some of us are capable of doing such acts worst than the animals.
Buddha says MIND IS THE FORERUNNER. Our acts and behaviour are dictated by ourselves and our own thinking. Our mind directs us to do good or evils.
We need to train our mind so that it has wholesome thoughts.
Wholesome thoughts will bring forth good results whereas unwholesome thoughts will bring forth bad results.
Some may say it's Ying Xin fate. She need to face it.

Buddha at home
I always have a nice and friendly discussions about political happenings with my father. Sometimes we do have differences in opinions and visions. But we have one similar view that if one is fair to all, the actions taken by the one will not subject to critisms or oppositions.
In Buddhism, it says all the beings must be fair in treatment to the other beings. We must care about their welfare and well-being. We must try our best to provide them all the necessity in life.
So as parents we have to show our love and care to our all memebrs of the family. We have to help each other to raduce suffering spiritually and materially. Please not to forget the two old father and mother at home. They are our Buddhas to learn with. They are experienced in life.
I have learned a lot from my father about ways to handle life. He teaches me to be patient in whatever situations be it difficult or easy situations. My mother always remind us not to gossip about others to avoid misunderstandings and quarrels. So the old parents are our Buddhas at home.
I would like to share also that my wife is also another Buddha to model. She always give me advice about ways to overcome problems in work and friends. She is more patient that me when solving children problems.
My kids are my Buddha also. They are well-behaved. They are respectful to all members in tha family. They don't arise problems as the other youths out there.
I am thankful to have such a good family members. I have work harder to improve my cultivations for future lifes to come.

Exam leak?
While marking the Physics trial paper for my students, I notice a few students' answers are almost similar to the answer in the marking scheme provided. I doubt their ability.
Nowadays, students,parents or educationists or the society at large, all of them want high performance in public exams. This phenomenon encourages the cheating in exams. Some will leak questions. Some will provide answers. Some will ask their students to memorise answers for the exams...............
My experience in education field, leaking questions will not help the students to grasp the aim of the education in school. The students will tend not to study hard. They will wait for the leaked questions and answers, They will not have the culture or habit to ask in the teaching and learning proces in their classroom.
At the end of their education, the students will not have the adequate knowledge and skills to solve problems in their career and life. They will encounter setbacks and disappointment. They will resort to the cheating methods to fulfill their needs and ambitions.
I think we are sick already.

2008 SPM Physics Trials
They are three students approached me just after the Physics trials. They told me that the paper was tough.
My advice to them is REDO and REDO.
REDO is a way to improve their understanding of the subject. They need to redo the same questions for many times. By doing REDO they will have more new ideas, more understanding , better grasp of the principles, laws and theories involved. They will know better to write answers.
My dear students you need to try this piece of advice.

Who am I ?
I am an ordinary man reincarnated to this world healthily . My destination is to be a teacher in a school named SMK Mahmud,27600 Raub. My specialities are Chemistry, Physics and Additional Mathemtics. I am in the teaching field for past 25 years already in the same school.
I am married to a beautiful and loving wife from Batu Bahat,Johor. She is a simple but intellegent woman. She takes care of the family well. Seldom hear her grumbling about burdened family chores. She is also a teacher.
We have three children named Shi Jie, Hao Min and Hao Ren. They are well-behaved,and good at study. Shi Jie is already in the second year medical course. Hao Min is finishing his A level before pursuing his medical course in India nest year. The youngest boy Hao Ren is working hard for his SPM exam. Hao Ren is suprisingly a very active child of the three. He can mange his study and activities well. He score well in all exams. I am proud of him.
My parents are in the 70s. They are helpful and caring. After our school hour, lunch is ready prepared by my mother. The foods are variety though not so delicious sometimes. My father is a happy and simple. He helps me to do the errands. Thanks to them.
